A-League: Sydney FC vs Central Coast

A-League Round 1 – Sydney FC 1 df Central Coast Mariners 0 @ Sydney Football Stadium

Sydney FC overcame a dismal first half performance to prevail 1-0 in this rematch of last season’s Grand Final. Clint Bolton was the hero, pulling off several near-miraculous saves to deny a Central Coast outfit that, for the first half at least, completely out-played their more fancied opponents.

Sydney turned the game around in the second half, dominating large periods of play. This culminated in a well taken goal by Iane Fyfe that proved to be the matchwinner.

Captain Dwight Yorke, returning from a layoff with injury that has seen him not play a game since the World Cup, had an unhappy night. Several poorly weighted passes had the team on the back foot and at times he seemed to be a passenger. He did improve as the match reached its conclusion, which bodes well for the future.

David Carney was the standout player in Attack, showing nimble skills and creating several chances. Nikolai Topor-Stanley did very well playing at left-back. New signing Alex Brosque was also imprssive.
