Rugby – Australian Provincial Championships 2006 – ACT Brumbies 14 df NSW Waratahs 13 at Viking Park, Canberra
Friday night saw the Brumbies and Waratahs take to a damp Viking park in front of a small but very vocal crowd. Due to the number of top-line players missing from both sides, the match never reached any great heights but was well contested nonetheless.
Poor place-kicking by ACT fullback Julian Huxley kept the match close, as several opportunities to convert penalties were badly missed. NSW went ahead shortly before halftime with a penalty try that also saw Brumbies’ fly-half Gene Fairbanks yellow carded.
Huxley, covering for the sin-binned Fairbanks, moved into fly-half and the backline looked significantly better for it. ACT finally crossed the line late in the second half, with hooker James McCormack crashing over. A late penalty to Huxley gave the Brumbies the win by the narrowest of margins.
