A-League: Sydney FC vs Newcastle

Sydney FC 2 drew with Newcastle United Jets 2 at Sydney Football Stadium

Round 4 saw last place Newcastle visit a Sydney side tormented by injury and bad luck. Things got off to a great start for the home side, with Steve Corica converting a penalty mid-way through the first half. When David Zdrillic headed home to make it 2-0, things looked rosy.

Unfortunately, that was the end of the good news as far as Sydney were concerned. Newcastle substitute Rodriguez, who was brought on in the 20th minute, scored in time-added-on at the end of the first half to narrow the gap.

Sydney started the second half looking flat, with Newcastle having the better of the chances, with Rodriguez prominent in everything they did. The Colombian eventually levelling the scores on the hour mark, with Keeper Clint Bolton fumbling the save.

It got worse — After a string of soft fouls, Sydney’s Steve Corica was given a straight Red Card for dissent and suddenly, Sydney were fighting to save the game. Newcastle had a superb chance come back off the post right at the death, but Sydney managed to hang on for the draw, moving them to outright 4th on the table.
