Asian Champions League 2007 – Matchday 2

Sydney FC vs Urawa Red Diamonds (JP)

At Sydney Football Stadium, March 21st, 2007. Crowd: 21,010

Sydney FC 2 drew with Urawa Red Diamonds 2

The Uruwa away fans threated to steal the show with their rambunctious support even as Sydney FC stole a very early lead through a David Carney goal, following a muffed clearance from the away sides defense and a neat pass from Mark Milligan.

Carney was again in the spotlight midway through the half when he was brought down in the box, leading to a nicely taken Ufuk Talay penalty. All was looking well for the home side who had started on fire and looked to be almost more than their highly fancied opponents could handle.

Uruwa, however, rallied strongly and dominated much of the last hour of the match. A nicely taken goal took them into half-time down by just a solitary goal and an unfortunate Clint Bolton dropped cross saw the equalizer conceded in the second half. Sydney had a few chances but a lack of match fitness showed and they were unable to put together the smooth moves shown in the first half.

Sydney and Uruwa are now equal on points at the top of their group, with Sydney now facing an away trip to Indonesia’s Persik Kedira while Uruwa face China’s Shanghai Shenhua.
