Shakugan no Shana – Episode 24
After having the episodes sitting around for months, I finally sat down and watched the rest of Shana over the weekend — I’d stopped at episode 16 for some now forgotten reason but once I started watching again found myself unable to stop. Despite having some familiar issues with unresolved character relationships, the ending is handled quite well.
Shana and Wilhelmina storm the Seirei-den, meeting with trickery from the Professor and his legions of automatons. Margery also makes a re-appearance and joins the fight. Meanwhile, Hecate continues her strange synchronizing with Yuji, enjoying the flood of human emotions she’s receiving from him.
Eventually, Shana breaks through the defenses and frees Yuji. The resultant break in the flow of emotions throws Hecate of balance and she then completely cracks after Yuji – none to subtly – tells her that she’s empty and can’t possibly fill herself with the feelings of others. This breakdown causes all the Power of Existence to flow out of her and cascade down on the city below.
The only way to absorb the massive flow is to summon a King of Guze, Alastor. This will have the unfortunate effect of ending Shana’s life but she decides to go ahead anyway and is surprised when Yuji takes her hand and announces he will follow her. She summons Alastor and finally confesses her feelings to Yuji just as the Seirei-den is engulfed in flame.
Shana, much to her surprise, wakes to find Yuji anxiously leaning over her. It turns out her capacity was great enough to handle the summoning of Alastor and she’s escaped relatively unharmed. Following this, life essentially returns to normal. Yoshida announces it is now round two in the battle for Yuji’s affections, while Wilhelmina is shown seeing Shana off to school alongside Yuji’s mother.
So, all’s well that end’s well.
