Australian Rugby Championship 2007 – Round 1

Played under the new ELV (or Experimental Law Variations), the grandest attempt yet at finally giving Australia a national Rugby competition kicked off last weekend, the howls of its detractors no doubt still ringing in its proverbial ears.

The teams answered the competition’s critics in the best possible way by turning on some excellent exhibitions of attacking Rugby and providing some glimpses at Wallabies of the future. Melbourne provided the upset of the round, defeating the highly fancied Vikings in Canberra. On the Gold Coast, the Aces sprinted out to a seemingly unassailable lead before being forced to hang on desperately for the win against a fast finishing Ballymore side.

The ABC’s coverage of the tournament is a real plus and will hopefully provide more exposure to this promising new competition.
