As previously rumored, Sydney has been confirmed as the host of a four team football tournament featuring Glasgow Rangers, Blackburn Rovers and AEK Athens (the original rumor mentioned Boca Juniors rather than AEK) over three nights from July 25th to July 31st. Each matchday will be a doubleheader, with tickets said to be starting from $29. The tournament will use an interesting incentive to play attacking football – in addition to the 3 points for a win or 1 for a draw, each goal scored will also earn a competition point.
All matches will be played at Sydney FC’s home ground, the SFS, which will hopefully result in a great atmosphere for each of the doubleheaders. The Premier of NSW also indicated that more was to come:
This inaugural tournament is the first of what will be an annual tournament in Sydney to attract global football brands each and every year,” said Kristina Keneally, NSW Premier.
The full lineup of matches is below:
Matchday 1: Sunday July 25th:
Game 1 at 12:45pm – Sydney FC v AEK Athens FC
Game 2 at 3pm – Blackburn Rovers v Glasgow Rangers
Matchday 2: Wednesday July 28th:
Game 3 at 6pm – AEK Athens FC v Blackburn Rovers
Game 4 at 8:15pm – Sydney FC v Glasgow Rangers
Matchday 3: Saturday July 31st:
Game 5 at 5pm – AEK Athens FC v Glasgow Rangers
Game 6 at 7:15pm – Sydney FC v Blackburn Rovers
I’m personally very happy to see this tournament happen – when combined with the Everton friendly it makes for a pre-season unlike any other Sydney FC has had in its history so far. With the season kicking off a week after the tournament, it will also provide a great lead-in and hopefully build some momentum for the season ahead.
